Giants win Memorial Cup

The Vancouver Giants won the Memorial Cup on Sunday, beating the Medicine Hat Tigers 3-1.
Michal Repik scored the go-ahead goal with 4:55 left in the third period, and Spencer Machacek added an empty-net goal and Mario Bliznak also scored. Tyson Sexsmith made 14 saves, allowing only Darren Helm’s goal.

Maltby signed to 3-year deal with Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings re-signed forward Kirk Maltby to a three-year contract, but the deal was not announced until recently.

“It actually happened before the playoffs,” Maltby said Friday. “But I didn’t want to talk about it and we were on the same page.”

Maltby has one assist in 10 playoff games this season and 28 points in 129 career postseason games, all with the Red Wings since 1996. He helped Detroit win Stanley Cups in 1997, ‘98 and 2002.

Since making his debut with the Edmonton Oilers during the 1993-94 season, Maltby has 233 career points.

Gaustad back

Rugged Sabres forward Paul Gaustad played his first game in three months Friday night, returning for Game 5 of Buffalo’s Eastern Conference semifinal series against the New York Rangers.

Gaustad was initially ruled out for the rest of the season after he sliced a tendon above his left ankle in the Sabres’ 3-2 win over Ottawa on Feb. 7, but made a quicker recovery. He had missed 35 games, including nine in the playoffs.

Gaustad had nine goals and 13 assists in 54 regular-season games, providing a physical presence on a line with co-captain Chris Drury. He had four assists in 18 games in last year’s playoffs, helping the Sabres reach the East finals before losing Game 7 to eventual champion Carolina.

With the best-of-seven series against New York tied at 2, Buffalo also welcomed back forward Maxim Afinogenov, who returned after being a healthy scratch in a 2-1 loss in Game 4 at New York on Tuesday.

The additions led the Sabres to sit out rookie forward Drew Stafford, who had two goals and two assists in nine playoff games, and Daniel Paille, who played his first game this postseason Tuesday.
