2011 World Junior Hockey ChampionshipOld foes faced each other last night in the semi-finals of the IIHF World Junior Championships in Buffalo. Russia took on Sweden and USA played Canada, with the winners going through to the final to be played on Wednesday night in the HSBC Arena. The Russia/Sweden semi-final was a close affair, with Russia winning 4-3 against favorites Sweden. The game went into extra-time after finishing on 3-3, but still a winner could not be decided, so a shootout it was. All that preparation and hard work comes down to luck of the draw, a bit like going to the casino to try your luck at cards or playing online poker. You could be the most skilled player, but on the day its how the puck falls and the luck that you have. After tonights game I might go down to Fallsview casino and try my luck at the poker table. Russia’s Denis Golubev scored the only goal in the shootout, his second goal of the game. Russian goalkeeper Dmitri Shikin managed to save the shot from Sweden’s final shooter, captain Anton Lander and Russia were through to the final! Sweden cruised through the group stage without much opposition, whilst Russia seemed to have more to prove. So perhaps it has nothing to do with luck and the more determined team won through in the end. Russia are certainly hungry for gold and never gave up, Sergei Kalinin tied the game at 3-3 with only 1 min 33 secs left in regulation play. And, in their previous game against Finland, Russia came from 1-3 down, to win 4-3 in overtime. In the other semi-final of the 2011 IIHF U20 World Junior Championships here in Niagara Falls, Team Canada beat Team USA 4-1. In a physical and high tempo game, Canada opened an early 2-0 lead, then used aggressive tactics and strong defense to shut out Team USA. So it is Canada against Russia in the final on Wednesday, be sure to catch the game and all the play-offs.
